Birdwatching
migration watch & breeding bird census |
Birdwatching can bring a lifetime of rewards and enjoyment
if you have the patience. Help build your own knowledge of birds
and their fascinating lives, by visiting St. John's Pool regularly. |
| Conservation work |
In 2005 two
pairs of Oystercatchers and two pairs of Arctic terns successfully
raised 10 chicks,
on a small nesting platform. In 2006 two
more nesting platforms will be built and installed.
Sand martins nesting sites can collapse or
be washed away. Artificial sites have proved very successful
throughout Britain, so in 2006 a barrel specifically designed
for sand martins to nest in was constructed to try and attract
some of these delightful birds. If you want to get involved in
projects like these please contact me. |
| Nest recording |
Following the ups and downs of the breeding season
can reveal fascinating information about how weather and predators
affect various species. Redesigned islands and new protection for
chicks will hopefully improve ground-nesting birds success. Keep
track by checking the log book in the hide or by email see
below. |
| Otter watch |
Otters use the pool regularly but... you need to
be very, very patient. Late evenings are best in the summer. |
